Mammals evolved from a group of reptiles called the synapsids that arose 310 to 275 million years ago WOW. From the synapsids, a branch called the therapsids appeared 275 to 225 million years ago, and it is during the early evolution of the therapsids that early mammal-like reptiles [a term now discouraged because none of them were actually reptiles] called cynodonts [group of largely carnivorous synapsids] arose that is so COOL!!!!!

meerkats live in groups of 20-50 extended family members in large underground tunnels. These family groups are called gangs or mobs OMG!!!!!!. One of the most important roles a meerkat plays is that of the sentry, or watch guard. The sentry will stand on its hind legs, propped up by its tail, and act as a lookout while the rest of the mob is outside the burrow COOL.
Nocturnal animals are active during the night, and diurnal animals are active during the day. In addition, both sorts of animals are adapted to the differing light levels and challenges of the different parts of the day that they are awake. Nocturnal animals are frequently vulnerable animals of prey. For example, mammals as an order were almost entirely nocturnal until their competitors and predators, the dinosaurs, became extinct. Small mammals, such as mice and tree shrews, remain mostly nocturnal in habit.
Nocturnal animals tend to have very large eyes. This increases their capacity to absorb light and produce an effective image on the retina. Some nocturnal animals have a membrane in their eyes that reflects light back into the retina for maximum absorption. This membrane, called a tapetum lucidum, is what produces the eerie glow in the eyes of a cat. Their eyes are further adapted for low light levels by being packed with specialized retinal cells called rods. Rods are cylindrical cells that are very good at picking up contrast, light and shade, but they are unfortunately poor at color vision. Diurnal animals tend to have better color vision because their eyes contain cells called cones. Different cone cells pick up different colors. Humans have cone cells specialized to pick up red and green and yellow and blue, which is why color blindness chiefly affects distinguishing between those colors and not others. Diurnal animals also have better visual acuity. |
Mammal. The largest cat of the Americas, the jaguar has become a symbol of power, strength, and beauty. Once worshiped as a god, the jaguar's name comes from a native American word meaning “the killer that takes its prey in a single bound.” Jaguars' skill in hunting is partly due to their extremely strong jaws. Jaguars make a variety of sounds, including roaring, mewing, and grunting. They are excellent swimmers, and they enjoy being in the water. While they do most of their stalking on the ground, they are also skilled at climbing and fishing. Like black leopards, black jaguars are called panthers.

The Rainbow Lorikeet is unmistakable with its bright red beak and colorful plumage. Both sexes look alike, with a blue (mauve) head and belly, green wings, tail and back, and an orange/yellow breast SO WOW. They are often seen in loud and fast-moving flocks, or in communal roosts at dusk. The Rainbow Lorikeet occurs in coastal regions across northern and eastern Australia, with a local population in Perth (Western Australia), initiated from aviary releases COOL!!!!!!! The Rainbow Lorikeet is found in a wide range of treed habitats including rainforest and woodlands, as well as in well-treed urban areas.

The kangaroo is one of Australia’s most iconic animals, and most species are endemic to Australia. There are over 60 different species of kangaroo and their close relatives, with all kangaroos belonging to the super family Macromedia (or macropods, meaning ‘great-footed’). The super family is divided into the Macropodidae and the Potoroidae families COOL
The Macropodidae (macropod) family includes kangaroos, wallabies, wallaroos, pademelons, tree-kangaroos and forest wallabies. Species in the macropod family vary greatly in size and weight, ranging from 0.5 kilograms to 90 kilograms. The Potoroinae (potoroid) family of kangaroos includes the potoroo, bettong and rat-kangaroo, which live only in Australia WOW!!!!!! |
Lions live in Africa south of the Sahara and in Northwest India. Lions don't actually live in the jungle. Their real habitat is the open savanna where they hunt mammals such as gazelles, antelope, and zebra. They may also cooperate to catch larger mammals such as buffalo, giraffes and even crocodiles. Lionesses, or female lions, usually do most of the hunting. Sometimes they work together to flush out prey. One lion will scare out prey towards the others making it difficult to escape. Lions live in groups called prides. These prides usually consist of as many as 15 lionesses and their young, and 3 adult males. An average lion's body is 4 1/2 to 6 1/2 feet long, and their tails are 26 1/4 inches long to 3 1/4 feet. They can also grow up to 3 1/2 feet high and can weigh up to 500 pounds.
So why are lions the kings of the jungle? Lions are the kings of the jungle because of their raw power and strength. Lions fear no other animals, however, like a king lions do have enemies. The lion's worst enemy is the hyena.
Hyenas eat the same food as lions, so the lions and the hyenas often come into conflict over food. The only other enemy the lions have is people. Unfortunately the beautiful fur of a lion is very valuable on black markets. Because of this the lion is in danger of poachers, and because of poachers, the lion is an endangered species. In fact humans are the only thing that lions have to fear. Unfortunately these poachers don't care if these lions become extinct, and extinct is forever. This means once lions are gone, they will never come back.
Like a king, lions also maintain order. A king maintains order by making laws and punishing those that don't abide. A lion maintains a balance by killing some animals. If there no lions, herds of antelope would overcrowd the savannas and destroy all the grass resources. Everything impacts something.
Kings are the most powerful people or rulers of a land. Perhaps this is why the lion is considered king, because it is control of the land it lives on and all the other animals that live on it.
Hyenas, however, are not really controlled by or fear the lions, but are a common enemy. It is sometimes said that if it wasn't for the ugly looks and walk of the hyena, they would be considered the kings of the jungle. On the other hand, the beauty and grace of a lion makes it the perfect king.
Lions also rest about 20 hours a day. In a sense, they have the life of kings. They eat, drink and sleep and do away with pests. This is why lions are considered the kings of the jungle.

Armadillos are the only mammals whose body is covered with hard shell. Only one armadillo species (nine-banded armadillo) lives in North America. Other 19 types live in South America. They inhabit grasslands, rainforests and semi-arid area. Most armadillo species are threatened because of habitat loss and hunting. They vary in size, from 5-59 inches in length to 3-120 pounds in weight. Armadillos can be pinkish, dark-brown, black, red, gray or yellowish in color. Their whole body (head, back, legs and tail) is covered with bony plates. Only three-banded armadillo can curl into the ball to protect itself from predators. Other armadillos run or dig a hole when they need to escape from predators. Their legs and long claws are perfectly adapted for digging. They can dig and create network of tunnels underground. They sleep 16-18 hours per day in their burrows. Armadillos also dig ground to find their favorite food - insects. Beside insects, they like to eat small mammals, baby birds, eggs, carrion, roots and fruit. Like anteaters, they have long sticky tongue that works perfectly when they hunt ants and termites. They eat fire ants also.

Lemurs are primates found only on the African island of Madagascar and some tiny neighboring islands. Because of its geographic isolation, Madagascar is home to many amazing animals found nowhere else on Earth. Lemurs may have floated there eons ago on "rafts" of vegetation and evolved in isolation over countless centuries.
Ring-tailed lemurs are unmistakable because of their long, vividly striped, black-and-white tail. They are familiar residents of many zoos. Lemurs use their hands and feet to move nimbly through the trees, but cannot grip with their tails as some of their primate cousins do. Ring-tailed lemurs also spend a lot of time on the ground, which is unusual among lemur species. They forage for fruit, which makes up the greater part of their diet, but also eat leaves, flowers, tree bark, and sap. Grizzly bears are majestic symbols of the wild. Bears live in and use a variety of habitat types, playing important roles in each one. This makes them an “umbrella species,” meaning that when we protect them and their habitat we also protect many species. Grizzly bears can also help ecosystems by distributing seeds and nutrients through their scat, and occasionally regulating ungulate populations WOW!!!!!!
The American black bear is the smallest of the three bears species found in North America, and are found only in North America. Black bears have short, non-retractable claws that give them an excellent tree-climbing ability.
The American lion was found in America and was way bigger than the African lion The head-body length of the American lion is estimated to have been 1.6–2.5 m (5 ft 3 in–8 ft 2 in)

The cheetah is the fastest land animal in the world. They can reach a top speed of around 113 km per hour. A cheetah can accelerate from 0 to 113 km in just a few seconds.Cheetahs are extremely fast however they tire quickly and can only keep up their top speed for a few minutes before they are too tired to continue.Cheetahs are smaller than other members of the big cat family, weighing only 45 – 60 kilograms. One way to always recognise a cheetah is by the long, black lines which run from the inside of each eye to the mouth. These are usually called “tear lines” and scientists believe they help protect the cheetah’s eyes from the harsh sun and help them to see long distances.Cheetahs are the only big cat that cannot roar. They can purr though and usually purr most loudly when they are grooming or sitting near other cheetahs. While lions and leopards usually do their hunting at night, cheetahs hunt for food during the day.A cheetah has amazing eyesight during the day and can spot prey from 5 km away.Cheetahs cannot climb trees and have poor night vision. With their light body weight and blunt claws, cheetahs are not well designed to protect themselves or their prey. When a larger or more aggressive animal approaches a cheetah in the wild, it will give up its catch to avoid a fight. Cheetahs only need to drink once every three to four days.

B Polar bears are the largest land carnivores in the world, rivaled only by the Kodiak brown bears of southwestern Alaska. Polar bears sit at the top of the food chain in the biologically rich Arctic. The most carnivorous of the bear species, polar bears feed primarily on the fat of ice-dependent seals. The remains of these seals provide food for many other Arctic wildlife species, giving polar bears a vital role in their ecosystem.
The lion is a large big cat and the only cat with a mane.
the mains like a horse but it's bigger. It's also used as something to empress the felines (the lion with the biggest main gets the girl). |
